How does a new website get traffic

There are various ways for a new site to get traffic.
  1. optomize your content for the Search engines
  2. Get relevant links that will bring you traffic
  3. Get links that will increase your search engine rankings (part of 1)

I'll take a quick look at getting you started on numbers 2 and 3. If you are in a competitive field you will have to start a link building campaign. Link exchanges is a good way of getting links, but when your site is brand new, you have little to offer other sites so it is tougher to get good links.

As a first step, I suggest spending time submitting to directories. Directories are a great way to get free links. The links will give you traffic and/or PageRank. I have created a site dedicated to identifying the best directores on the web. There are great free directories and paid directories that will help you get started.

I usually start link exchanging at the same time. Once my PageRank is above zero I find it is much easier to exchange links. At that point, I jump into a full blown link exchange program.

Does a blog site benefit better from a blog directory than a general website directory?
